The Value of Decluttering Sessions for Your Teenager
Are you curious about how decluttering sessions can benefit your teen? Let’s take a closer look at why these sessions can make a real difference in teenagers’ lives.
Building Independence
Living in a messy and cluttered home makes it significantly harder for teenagers to develop their independent skills like getting ready for school, showering, making breakfast, unstacking the dishwasher, making their bed etc. Creating functional spaces and safe environments is key to successful family relationships.
Improved Family Relationships
Getting ready for the day can be stressful for both parents and teenagers. Having morning routines and organised spaces will help teens find what they need to build independence while reducing conflict.
Improved Accessibility
A clutter-free environment allows teenagers to easily find and access their belongings, making daily activities, family routines and therapies more streamlined and efficient.
Enhanced Independence and Confidence
As teenagers begin to see positive results of their efforts, their confidence grows, and they develop a sense of ownership and pride in their spaces. This newfound independence and confidence extend beyond their living spaces and can positively impact other areas of their lives, such as taking on responsibilities with family chores, pet care and self-care activities.
Increased Calm
A clutter-free environment promotes a sense of calm, as well as reduces visual and sensory overload, allowing teens to focus and concentrate better on their tasks and activities. By creating organised and relaxing spaces, we create a foundation for a more balanced and peaceful daily routine, which can contribute to improved overall well-being and family life.

I'm a Support Coordinator, how would my participant benefit from your decluttering services?
Most people don’t explicitly have the word decluttering in their plan, however we find most participants would benefit from our decluttering services and support whether it be one session or a series of sessions to help in the participant’s home.
Clutter has physical, emotional and psychological impacts on health and wellbeing and affects everyone in different ways.
We can assist participants with decluttering and organising as well as help set up processes and systems to help their home run more smoothly. We also help develop daily living and life skills as well as build independence in both children and adults. A lot of OTs will recommend that participants work with us for a couple of sessions to help achieve the goals the participant is working on.
Here are just a few of the many ways our decluttering services can align with participants NDIS goals:
- Meal planning and preparation can be difficult for those with executive dysfunction. Decluttering and organising a participant’s kitchen and pantry equips them to more easily complete this daily task with independence.
- Getting ready for the day can be stressful for both parents and children. Having morning routines and organised spaces will help children be able to find what they need and build independence.
- Depression, anxiety and living with clutter can be a vicious cycle. Non judgemental professional support with decluttering can be an important part of mental health management.
- Living in a messy and cluttered home has a detrimental effect on all family members. Creating functional spaces and safe environments is key to successful family life and healthy relationships.
- Fatigue and overwhelm are common among those with complex health conditions. Professional Organisers are experienced at creating a calm and relaxing space in which to meet participants goals within their home.
Do you have experience working with NDIS participants?
Yes! We have been working with participants through the NDIS since 2016. Our team are experienced professional organisers, supporting clients with both physical and psycho/social disabilities. We have experience helping children and adults with post-traumatic stress disorder, acquired brain injuries, visual impairment, chronic diseases, multiple sclerosis, autism, ADHD, anxiety disorder and depression, just to name a few. We help hundreds of NDIS participants each year and we are passionate about helping all people gain freedom from clutter.
What does a session look like?
We are a hands-on service. We come alongside you to help you achieve your goals in a really practical way that a psychologist or OT or speech pathologist isn’t going to be able to do in a 4 hour hands-on session. We come in and physically do the work either with yourself, the NDIS participant, a parent/guardian/caregiver or whoever is in the home who can be the decision maker.
After an introduction and quick tour of the space to be worked on, we talk to you about your goal and vision for the space. During this time we ask how you want the room to function; what you want to be able to do with the space, how you would like it to look and feel and then we start the decluttering process.
We work with you and coach you in decision making about what needs to leave the house as rubbish or donations and what is staying in the house. We then help organise the space and set up systems to keep things easy to access, clutter free and organised.
Do I need to do the work with you?
We take your capacity into consideration in all sessions. It’s totally fine if you need to sit the whole time, rest, take a break or lie down during the session. It is important that you are present within the home and available to make decisions with us as we never make decisions on your behalf about what is to stay and what is to be removed from your space. We are also there to help and coach you through any difficult decisions.
In the case of some families, if the participant is a child, they may not be in the home during the session and the parents have specifically arranged for us to come while the child is at school. In this case the parents or care givers would be the decision makers.
We will be there to do all the lifting, carrying, organising and physical work and are confident in helping clients with both psycho/social and physical disabilities, and fatigue.
In a typical 4 hour session we make sure we all have a quick 10 minute break so we can all have the energy to complete the session.
We do not require additional support workers to be in attendance during sessions, but welcome whatever support people you might need to feel confident and comfortable during our sessions. Sometimes our NDIS participants will have a support worker or support coordinator attend the first session and then feel very comfortable to have future sessions on their own.
I’m plan managed, can I access your services?
Yes! Please have a chat to your Plan Manager or Support Coordinator to confirm that our services fit within your plan goal/s. They are welcome to give us a call for further clarification.
I’m self managed, can I access your services?
Yes! We would love to help you access our services through your self managed plan. Please fill in the contact form and we will give you a call to discuss your goals and how we can support you.
I’m NDIA managed, can I access your services?
We are unable to help NDIA managed participants at this time.
How does invoicing work?
If you are self managed:
Invoices are sent upon completion of each session with 7 days terms of payment. Tolls, donation drop off and any travel expenses will be itemised on your invoice.
If you are plan managed:
We are not NDIS registered; however most participants can include decluttering and organising in their current plan, providing there are sufficient funds and it aligns with your plan goals.
Invoices are sent upon completion of each session with 7 days terms of payment. Tolls, donation drop off and any travel expenses will be itemised on your invoice. We suggest speaking to your support coordinator or plan manager if you require further advice on whether our services fit within your plan.
How do you invoice for tolls and travel?
The first 30 minutes of team travel each way is included in all service packages. Any additional travel time after the first 30 minutes will be billed accordingly at our hourly rate. Non labour costs (vehicle expenses) are invoiced at $0.97 per km after the 30 minutes of included travel.
Any tolls and cost of parking incurred in providing services will be itemised on your invoice as per NDIS guidelines.
What happens to the rubbish at the end of a session?
Normal household rubbish is placed in your bins. For larger amounts of rubbish, we work with a company called 1800 Got Junk in our major cities and in regional areas use local rubbish removal companies. 1800 Got Junk are familiar with working with NDIS participants and where possible, we organise for them to come on the day that we are working with you. The best thing about it is that they pack the truck for us which means our time is not taken away from working with you. They will also take it straight away so you don’t have to look at it anymore or deal with it at a later date.
Please speak to your support coordinator to determine if rubbish removal can be included in your NDIS plan, or if you need to pay for this privately. You will be entering an agreement with any rubbish removal company separately to our service agreement.
They only charge for what they remove whereas with a skip you are charged the full amount regardless of whether you fill it or not.
Can you take away donations?
Yes! We are able to take up to one car load of donations to charity at the end of each session. We simply invoice 15 minutes of time for this service and the TAOD team member will complete this after your session finishes.
We deliver to many charity shops around Australia and we know what they will take and what they will not take. If you would like your things to go to specific places, you will need to do that delivery yourself, unless it is convenient for our staff to do it on your behalf.
If you have more donations than fit in our car, we can help you book a donation pick up or help you fill your car also if you are able to do a donation drop off yourself.
What happens if I am not up to having the session when you arrive?
Our team is really gentle and understanding and able to handle whatever state you’re in when you open the door.
Our team is very experienced in gauging situations and reading the room. Sometimes when you open the door you might feel exhausted and anxious so rather than racing into working straight away, we want you to feel comfortable. We are there to serve you so if you need 10 mins at the start of a session to have a cup of tea etc then that’s totally fine with us.
Sometimes we do have the case when we turn up and someone says “I’m not up to it today.” In these situations, we have a few strategies that we use. Rather than say ok and walk away, and charge the full cancellation fee, we will ask you if you could do just 10 minutes together. Or are there any items we could take as donations? Are there some easy wins we could do?
We will often provide alternatives, maybe offering a shorter session. We might say, “What if we just try for half an hour/half a session?” because once we start together, more often than not participants will start to engage and say “Let’s keep going, I’m feeling good now.” But we never push; there is always freedom. So if we turn up and someone truly can’t do the session, we fully acknowledge that and it’s accounted for in our cancellation policy and service agreement.
What is your cancellation policy?
Our cancellation policy is as per the NDIS guidelines. Any cancellations made with less than 2 business days incurs a full cancellation fee.
For example: if you have a session booked for a Thursday, as long as you let us know before the session time on Tuesday (say 10am), there is no cancellation fee at all. However, if there is anything less than two business days, the full cancellation fee is invoiced.
