Garage Decluttering

How Is Your Garage?

Are you running out of floor space? Do you feel like the garage walls are closing in on you? Is it hard to find items in your garage?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it might be time to declutter your garage.

The garage is a space that can easily attract clutter. Sometimes it’s easier to put things away in a place where we don’t spend much time. But over time, items pile up, making it impossible to access your space, let alone move around without knocking things over.

“Out of Sight, Out of Mind?” Not Anymore!

Have you heard of the phrase “out of sight, out of mind”? Once the clutter has piled up in your garage, it will certainly be on your mind. We believe your home should be a haven and this includes your garage. If you don’t have a strategy to deal with clutter, it will accumulate over time. The good news is that we can help you reclaim your garage space.

A decluttered garage has many benefits. Imagine even having room to park your car! But seriously, having an organised garage, with easy access storage and the ability to find what you need when you need it, is incredible.

As you make an effort to declutter, you might even have new ideas about how to best use the space. A garage transformation will have flow on effects to the rest of your home too.

Tips to Help You Deal with Garage Clutter

You may find your garage one of the most challenging places to declutter because maybe all the stuff you didn’t want has ended up there. When you are struggling to park your car or close the garage door because of the clutter, it’s a good sign it’s time to deal with it.

1. Know Your Why

Garages can quickly become a place where all your seasonal stuff goes. Holiday decorations, camping gear, gardening tools, bikes, scooters, suitcases (and more!), often find their way into the garage. Tackling this space might feel like a big project, but if you plan ahead, you can declutter your garage in no time and give yourself peace of mind knowing that behind the garage door is a blissful space rather than one that causes stress.

You don’t want the car to sit outside garage doors because there’s no room to park. You also don’t want your garage to look like an antique shop with unwanted furniture and collectibles. Finding a home for the misfit items will go a long way.

2. Declutter

Before you start the fun of organising, it’s important to do a thorough declutter. This means going through everything in the garage and deciding what you want to keep, and what you’re ready to let go of. If you’re stuck with where to start, begin by throwing out anything that is broken or by donating anything you’ve not needed in the last 2 years. Once you’ve decluttered you’ll have a better idea of how much you need to store and what storage solutions you need to plan for.

3. Assess the Space

Once you’ve decluttered the items that no longer need to be stored in the garage, have a look at the entire garage and think of what the greatest use of space will be. Is there a way to have dedicated zones? Do you need to invest in some shelving, a bike rack, or maybe just some sturdy and stackable containers? How many cars need to be in the space? How easily do you need to access the bikes or the lawnmower? Take these things into consideration with your planning.

4. Use the Right Storage Solutions

Sturdy storage boxes, shelving units and utilising wall space are all excellent garage storage ideas. You want to think about making things easy to access, while also maximising the use of the space. You need to be strategic with what storage solutions will work best for your garage.

Investing in the right garage storage for the items you want to keep is vital. This might include garage cabinets or overhead garage storage. Once you have a place for everything, it will be much easier to keep it organised!

5. Maintain and Declutter Regularly

Now that your garage is decluttered and organised, you’ll be enjoying more floor space and maybe even enough space to park the car! However, don’t forget if you’re not intentional, your garage is a space that can quickly become cluttered again. This is why it’s important to make time for decluttering regularly. You don’t want your garage to become a storage unit for all the things you don’t need or use.

Plan to go through your garage and declutter a couple of times a year so you can curate what you’re keeping and adjust your storage to match, as time goes on.

If you follow these decluttering tips, you will be well on your way to having a tidy garage that you can use! No more dread when you open the garage door!
